Ride on the Great Ocean Road and spend time at home with Australia’s foremost cycling legend, Phil Anderson. This weekend package has been designed to give you an opportunity to explore the Great Ocean Road beyond the boundaries of the Gran Fondo circuit on Phil's favourite local route, known as "The Hell of the South".
Join Phil at home, nestled in Grey River and after your ride consider the trophy room, bike shed and other cycling memorabilia along with the garden and adjoining beach. The local Koala's generally put in an appearance in one of the most iconic getaway destinations on the coast.
To purchase this tour, or arrange a date for a private group booking please "Register your Interest" at the bottom of this page and we will contact you shortly.
Thanks very much for the weekend. It was privilege to be your first customers at the house. Accommodation and atmosphere very comfortable and relaxed
Food excellent………..Anne Marie should be a professional cook
Ride leader……very professional…what else would you expect!
I wish to thank you both for an outstanding weekend. The weekend exceeded my expectations. Your house and location are fantastic. Your friends, private beach and the fruits of your garden are also fantastic!
The cycling was very enjoyable, (it was a great route!), I really appreciated the way Phil spread himself around the group to give us all a unique experience. I also appreciated the way Simon and Peter would stay with me all those times when I dropped well back. This effort has not been wasted I have taken away bucket loads of inspiration and motivation from their support.
The rides and dates can be modified to suit your group
Today's Ride: -If you do not require a pick-up from Avalon airport*, arrive at Grey River any time from 5.00pm onwards where you will be settled in to your accommodation for the weekend and Phil will assist with your bike setup if required. Relax in Phil’s home as we prepare for our first dinner together.
Our meals are prepared by our team chef and emphasise a “menu sportif”. The food is relaxed with seasonal veggies and salad from the garden. There will be a selection of local wines and beers for additional carbohydrates if required.
Relax over a wine, enjoy the view and join Phil down memory lane.
*If you do require an airport pickup, please make sure we have your arrival details.
Hell of the South: Grey River > Grey River, 129km
Today's Ride: 129km
After an early gourmet breakfast with Phil-barista-Anderson at the helm, we head out the front door and onto the Great Ocean Road. From the moment we start our ride you will be greeted with the world famous vista of this beautiful road.
Heading South, you will warm up quickly with the climb of Cape Patton, one of the highest view points on the Great Ocean Road, the first cab off the rank as we start the ride.
From here, we'll head into the Aire Valley, then Glenaire, Johanna, and Lavers Hill, before a brief stop in Ferguson for espresso or perhaps a feed. The road gradually narrows from Beech Forrest and you now have the opportunity to ride one of the most scenic and technical sections of road through the Otway Rain forest. Interrupted occasionally by tourist traffic the road sweeps down quietly through the gullies before our final turn to home.
Arriving home mid-afternoon, we’ll have time to relax, put our feet up, and have afternoon tea or perhaps a walk and swim at the beach. With a relaxed afternoon comes happy-hour; always Phil’s favourite time of the day. Enjoy a pre-dinner snack and a refreshing ale around the fire on the deck, or on the (very) private beach across the road.
Our resident chef will have been chopping and dicing for a few hours now and is sure to amaze you with great flavours and sustenance to recover and refuel for yet another day of riding in paradise. With the sun well and truly over the horizon we can reflect on a great day in great company.
Hell of the South: Grey River > Lorne > Grey River, 51km
Today's Ride: 51km rolling hills.
A cyclists early start awaits as we aim to ride with the rising sun reflecting on the water. We're likely to be feeling a little shattered, so our ride today is a classic coffee shop ride but on the Great Ocean Road.
We'll ride what is considered the most scenic section of the Great Ocean Road and head north to Lorne passing through the small seaside communities of Kennett River and Wye River first.
The tourist buses pour down this road, full of international guests. This beautiful hilly coastline will mesmerize and is the best riding in the world. Early is always best before the before the weekenders head home and the traffic builds up with car loads of Koala Hunters on the prowl.
If your legs are still hungry for more, when we get to Lorne Phil can take you for a few repeats on the Benwerrin Hill (perhaps another day...) or, alternatively, you could turn for home and head to our favourite coffee stop at the Wye River store. A must stop for a coffee and muffin.
Finally we must drag away from the store and head home.
